Old Anime VS New Anime Empty Old Anime VS New Anime

Post by MrSkoringo Sun Aug 26, 2012 5:39 pm

For those otaku both old and new, this is the thread on ParodyOX Forums that is for you.

Here we will discuss a debate that has been going around in anime fandom culture. The debate of Old Anime VS New Anime. I wanted to make this thread as I found that it would make an interesting conversation for all to take part in. So, I want a good clean convo. No flame wars, no insults, no blows bellow the belt, and other such standard things. (Or see rules at the bottom of this post)

Now before I get into my thoughts on the debate, what makes a new anime new and an old anime old? Well by my standards, I believe it is all a matter of animation style (hand drawn or computer animated), it's quality in overall production and the time it was released. Hence why I made old 1999 and before and new 2000 and after. Mainly that's a rough guesstimate but it's one I believe that should suffice to work for "old" and "new". If anyone would like to add any additional thoughts or info, go for it right here.

    Now to my thoughts:
When it comes to old and new series... I can't really choose a side in the debate. It really all depends on the show. I mean both generations of anime have shows I like and dislike. Old series like Fist of the North Star, Space Adventure Cobra, Dragonball Z, DNA2, Inuyasha, Betterman, Silent Mobius, Steam Detectives and many others still are enjoyable to watch even till this day. And new animes like Chrono Crusade, Madoka Magica, High School DXD, Haiyorei Nyaruko-San, Acchi Kochii, Accel World, Full Metal Alchemist / Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and other newer titles are always fun and bringing new things to the table. Both areas have their good and bad titles and both have their own pros and cons. In terms of production however, I have to give it to the edge to the newer anime. Mainly because of how well put together the overall animation and sound and production is. But in the defense of the older series, much of the older animes do have a certain charm to them due to the fact that the animation and characters are actually hand drawn and put into work through hand. Which is pretty awesome to see. It's kinda like comparing Beauty and the Beast to something like Tangled. So again in terms of technical aspects, both are well matched themselves in my view.

Now it's up to you forum goers, debate away on your views of The Old VS The New. Talk about favorite titles from each side, what you think, etc. And most importantly: Have fun!

    Thread Rules:
    1. No Flaming or Personal / Ad-Homonym Attacks Towards One Another.
    2. Keep Opinions Clean.
    3. Have Fun!

Rules are subject to change at anytime. Failure to follow rules on the thread will result in warnings, possible termination and other such consequences.

Old Anime VS New Anime Empty Re: Old Anime VS New Anime

Post by Neonie Sun Aug 26, 2012 6:09 pm

It was really the new stuff that pulled me in. I've watched a whole bunch from 2002 onward. The only old ones past that I think I've seen are Pokemon, the Tenchi Stuff, and Lain. But mostly I much prefer the direction anime went after the 2000's. I feel like the art has vastly improved, the story telling is more oriented in a direction I like, and the general feel and production value of it has gone way up.

Old Anime VS New Anime Empty Re: Old Anime VS New Anime

Post by Kuu Mon Aug 27, 2012 2:09 am

My vote definitely goes to both. There's no way I could possibly decide. Both old and new anime have had extreme influence in my life.

Old anime will always hold a place for me. I love that there was a time when substance was much more important than visual appeal.

Advances in high definition visuals and animation quality has really come a long way, I just get tired of pointless harems that are only created as fap material. From time to time, though, an anime will come around that really blows me away with it's visuals or, surprisingly enough, it's incredible writing.

I would have to say both. I like watching the current anime's that are out now, but I can go back and watch any of the older anime's that were released. I had fun watching Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, but I also had fun watching Yu Yu Hakusho with my older brother. I think it's up to the watcher on which to decide on. ^^

I'd go with both, although I don't like series like DBZ or Gundam. I have watched alot of older series and am continuing to watch pretty much every anime out there, hence my signature:

While I do love the new stuff, and that's pretty much all I watch, I can't ignore the old animes that made me love anime originally. So, I chose both of them.

I woke up one morning when I was seven, and watch Princess Mononoke with my grandma, and that forever changed my life. Granted, after that I just watched whatever animes I could, though nowadays it's only new stuff. So,

Old and new have their likes AND dislikes for me, so I don't really have a preference in this matter.

I am a relatively newer anime fan though as I really only have been taking this hobby seriously for about 4 years now. So the majority of anime I have watched is stuff that has aired in the past 10 to 12 years or so.

I'm not an Otaku but I think I can still voice my opinion in this. I chose both. There are some old and new anime that I like. I just personally think it's silly for one to chose a specific era over the other. That's just me though.

I'm gonna flip the script and ask which era had more anime that you personally enjoy? did you like more series or movies made before 1999 or after?

Both. I love the new ideas being thrown around today and how most anime that I have watched likes pulling the rug out from under me... but my nostalgia, man.
